On Sunday 1st November 2009 Blackpool Music Service provided workshops, and a free pre-show talk for Blackpool pupils to share the experience of performing with ‘The Mugebkyo Taiko Drummers’ at the Grand Theatre. Our young percussionists from across the borough also appreciated massive ticket discounts for the evening performance.

This unique educational programme included the opportunity for pupils to play authentic Japanese percussion instruments and to appreciate the aural and visual culture associated with this world travelled ensemble. To conclude their experience they were subjected to ‘a spectacular concert of heart-pounding excitement’ of which all pupils appreciated.

Andrew Simpson, BMS percussion teacher who teaches those pupils who attended enthused that ‘our pupils really enjoyed this experience. They learnt so much and it has inspired them to work even harder with their practical skills and to become more involved in ensemble playing’.

This event was just one of many provided by BMS as part of their much respected Creative Music Making Programme. Andrew White, Music Adviser for BMS highlighted the necessity to encourage all pupils to take part in such events ‘only by working with, and experiencing performances from such musical artists will our pupils aspire to become musicians themselves. We have a great deal of musical talent in Blackpool and we endeavour to support all those who wish to reach their full musical potential’.
